PiSignage players update their software from the server; there is nothing to install by hand. When a newer player version is available than the one a player is running, the Screens page offers an update for that player.
Updating in the new interface
-
Open Screens in the left menu. The version chip under each screen name (for example 5.5.9) is the software version the player is running. When a newer version is available, an orange Update player arrow appears in the row's action column, next to the view and settings icons. Players that are already up to date do not show the arrow.
-
Click the orange arrow. The Update Player dialog shows the current version and the new version, and reminds you that the player restarts during the update, needs a stable network and power supply, and stops playback while it updates. Click Update Player to start.
-
The player downloads the new release, prepares the upgrade and reboots into the new version. This takes a few minutes depending on the network. If the new version fails to start or crashes, the player reboots again and reverts to the previous version on its own. When the player reports back, the version chip in its row shows the new version and the orange arrow disappears.
Updating several players at once
Tick the checkbox at the left of each player you want to update, then click Update Players in the bar that appears above the list. Confirm in the dialog; every selected player that has an update available is updated.
Updating in the classic interface
In the players screen, press the blue up-arrow button next to the player name, if available, to upgrade the software. You can find the release notes by following the link in the popup. If a beta release is available you can select it in the popup at the bottom.
The player downloads the image, prepares for the upgrade and reboots to load the new version. If the new version has some issues or crashes, the player automatically reboots and reverts to the previous version.
